Government Engineering College, Thrissur, situated just 4km from Thrissur town, the cultural capital of Kerala, is one of the premier engineering institutes in the country. It was founded in 1958, the foundation stone being laid by Pandit Jawarharlal Nehru making it one of the oldest engineering college in Kerala. GEC has been rated consistently among the top technical institutes in South India, with students being admitted purely on the basis of merit.

The institute is well networked with the industry and it has been helping the industry to grow through focused training and consultancy programmes. The mutual gain is obvious, as seen from the placement track record of the institute.

Being the choice of the top rank holders in the common entrance exam, conducted by the Government of Kerala, the college regularly receives the cream of nearly a lakh student who undertakes the test.

 
 

The department of chemical engineering  set up in 1962, was the first of its kind in Kerala offering B. Tech degree through a four year course. During the course  the student is given  an in depth understanding of the basic principles of engineering aided by well equipped, and sophisticated equipments, by highly qualified and experienced faculty, enabling the student to  groom into a professionally competant chemical engineer.

 
 
 

Since the Govt. Engineering College, Thrissur is situated very near to the industrial areas of Cochin, Palakkad and Coimbatore, there is a close rapport between the industries, government departments or agencies and the department of Chemical Engineering. A lot of industrial research and consultancy works are carried out by the faculty members, especially in the field of industrial pollution control, safety, energy and environment, much of which earned wide acclamation and received awards and recognitions. Live industrial problems were identified and given as project works for final year B.Tech. and M.Tech. Students. :: Part-time B.Tech. degree course for diploma holders who are working in industries.
:: Process development and plant design by the department for the small and medium size industries.
:: Analysis and testing of industrial chemicals and materials by the department.
:: Guest lectures in the department by industrial experts, especially in engineering fields like energy, environment, safety, biochemical engineering and computerized process control.
:: Industrial visits by staff and students of the department.
:: Industrial training programmes for the final year students of the department.
 
     
 

The students undertake projects in final year under the guidance of staff member. The topics are usually in subjects like process control, unit operations, polymers, pollution control, and design of process industries and are primarily industry based. While a student gains experience of industrial conditions and practical functioning, the industry is benefited from the research work done. Projects done by the students have won accolades at national level competitions.

The department of chemical engineering, Government Engineering College, Thrissur was set up to provide a world class programme, bridging the gaps in technical education and developing competencies in the frontier areas of chemical engineering studies. The institute also promises that its curriculum aims to create a technically sound student with multiple skills. The syllabus followed by the college (set by University of Calicut) has been rated as one of the toughest in the country, constantly revamped incorporating all the latest innovation in the realm of engineering.

The course structure of the college is designed in a way so as to nurture and mould young minds into competent engineering professionals to manage vital sections of the economy.

Apart from the engineering subjects the students are also trained in interpersonal relations, communication skills and managerial tasks through co-curricular activities. The educational process also fosters team building through participation in group activities and classroom discussions.

The students are highly conversant with the time value of money, profitability analysis and the assessment of financial statements which leads to the maximisation of profit which is one of the main goals of any industrial establishment.

  Our department has been blessed with many companies who came for the placement. The companies include: CTS Chennai, Gharda Chemicals Pune, Hindustan Lever Bangalore, Honeywell Pune, Infosys Bangalore, Kerala Chemicals & Proteins Kochi, US Software Thiruvananthapuram, etc..

            Of the 2002- 06 batch students, 70 % students are placed in different companies with an average salary of 1.5 lakh rupees per annum. The 48% students of the 2003-07 batch are also placed with an average salary of 1.8 lakh rupees per annum. Many multinational and Indian companies offered to us for placements.
